So, I’ve decided…
I’ve decided to go with the long story, the trilogy. I’m scared now. Don’t ask me why, but it scares the crap out of me to think that I’ve committed myself to this project. I’m such a wuss. *enter laughter here*
Perhaps tomorrow I shall put up an excerpt of the first chapter, seeing as everyone else has done so.
Wish me luck!
Distraction, thy name is… ooh, look! A bunny!
I had the perfect opportunity to write today at my lunch hour. Instead, I wandered the paths of the internet, doing everything but write. Comics, forums, photo surfing… yeah. I got little done. Though, I did manage to write the synopsis of the final scene for the vague story in my head, so I suppose that’s a start.
Still, I wonder if this story will get written. I don’t have a yen for it like I do a longer plot of mine that I’ve been holding off for the past year. I’m not certain of the other one, however, because it’s SO long, it is looking like a trilogy. The last thing I want to do is publish the first of a trilogy and spend the next 20 years writing the two sequels. Bad for business.
Maybe I’d better go back to the drawing board and find something I really want to write.
What the heck do I know?
The first part, the most important one, I think, is to come up with what the heck I’m going to write. I have a ton of choices, from stories that are already partially written to vague plotlines that don’t even have characters yet. The possibilities are endless.
The experts say to start with what you know.
Ok, I can go with that, I think. But what do I know?
I work in a print shop. I guess I could write a story about print shop people, but who’d read that? Unless I added a press that ate people. Then I could make it eat my coworker, and while that would certainly be entertaining for me, I’m not certain the appeal will cross over to the mass public. Besides, it’s been done. Stephen King did it with a clothes washer in ‘The Mangler’ and Charles Beaumont did it with a press in an episode of The Twilight Zone called ‘Printer’s Devil’. And while I greatly admire both fantastically wicked-minded men, I don’t want to repeat their works.
So what else do I know? Most of my classes in college were scientifically based. However, I’m not certain a story about earthquakes and dolphins would fly any better than the man-eating press.
I actually have a story in mind, but I’ll have to re-evaluate whether it’s mass-public material. It follows lines that I’m familiar with and things I “know”. Meaning, it is in the horror/thriller genre, which seems like a cop-out to me since that’s all I really write. But, hey… the experts say go with what you know. And I know horror.
The Challenge!
So, this is where it all begins. The acceptance of a challenge and the beginning of a journey.
Four aspiring authors, none of whom have been published, take on the challenge of writing, editing and beginning the process of getting published.
Creating this blog is part of the challenge- to document the adventure and to hopefully combat the pitfalls of procrastination and distraction.
So, basically, this blog is all about getting my ass in gear and actually doing something with one or more of the long list of plots ramming into each other in my brain. I have yet to choose which one I’m going to use for this challenge, but that will come soon enough, I’m sure. My first goal: Pick a story.
